Taksim is the nervous system of modern Istanbul 24 hours a day. It was on this site that the "Cumhuriyet Aniti" monument was built in 1928 to commemorate the founding of the Turkish Republic. For the record you will also find an 18th century water pipe system which gave the square its name as"Taksim" means "division" in Arabic.
Taksim Square is an iconic place and a starting point for your many discoveries as many buses, trams, subways and even cable cars depart from here. It is also the start of "Istiklal Caddesi" this very long shopping street that descends from close to Taksim all the way to the Golden Horn.
How to get there : If you're on the side of Kabataş, the fastest and most original way is to take the funicular that will save you a long climb (3TL one way).
