Blandy's wine lodge
That museum together with Madeira Wine Company, one of the oldest wine cellars in Funchal, is located in a group of buildings from civil baroque architecture.
For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous of quality Madeira wine.
The Blandys are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811.
At the beginning, the wine was transported from one place to another inside goats skins (the skin of the animal was used as a big bagpipe filled with wine). That method was abandoned because it caused significant losses of wine, not because of the tightness of the goat skin, but because it allowed direct access to the wine, and some wine often ended up in the carrier’s stomach!
After discovering how the wine is made and the history of the people who produced it, visit the tasting room “Max Römer”. This room carries the name of this famous German painter who painted the entire interior of this tasting room at the time he lived in Madeira.
