From 23rd November to 30th December 2018
What best describes the Cluj-Napoca Christmas Fair? It is the holiday of the FAMILY, the entire extended family: made up of children and grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins and so on. This encompassing term is often used in Transylvania, a word that brings warmth into the conversation and makes you think of childhood memories. And this is the feeling the Christmas Fair wants to give everyone present.
So why should you pay Cluj-Napoca a visit this Christmas season? It is one of the most important academic, cultural, industrial and business centers in Romania, hosting the biggest university in the country, the Babes-Bolyai University. Not only that, but it was also the European Youth Capital in 2015. The access to and from Cluj-Napoca is easily facilitated both through our airport, the Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport, with its 16 airlines and also through trains and buses that can take you anywhere in the country. Geographically, it is placed at roughly the same distance from Bucharest, Budapest and Belgrade, but you can easily visit any of the cities rich in tradition (Sibiu, Brasov, Alba Iulia) that are close nearby. Being at the intersection of a chain of mountains, a plateau and a plain, Cluj-Napoca facilitates the access to enjoying a wonderful landscape.
Now that we’ve told you what you can do outside of Cluj, let us tell you what is so great at the city itself. Because of the variety of hotels and motels peppered throughout the city, you can be certain you will always find lodgings here, and you will always be welcomed by kind people who have your comfort in mind.
The magic of Christmas in Cluj
Once you have settled in, it is time to visit the Christmas Fair itself. The Christmas Market is placed in Piata Unirii, the past heart of the medieval city of Cluj, grouped around the Church of Saint Michael, with the monumental ensemble Matia Corvin in the centre. The largest piazza in size of the old markets in central and southeastern Europe, Piata Unirii is one of the most important historical places in Cluj-Napoca, and as such, it is the chosen place for the Christmas Fair.
To offer the piazza a cleaner look, in the first edition of the Market, the organizers placed the skating rink around the equestrian statue, to better use the unoccupied space, and they aligned the commercial cottages on the side that holds the terraces to offer the centre the specific European Capital look. The skating rink is one of the main attractions, because people of all ages can participate, putting their problems aside for a few hours to enjoy the winter holidays.
But the skating rink is not all that is offered at the Fair. From the main stage where you can listen to different kinds of genres and carols, to theater and performances, to the commercial cottages where you can find products of traditional trade, there is something for everyone.
And who can forget the activities for the youngest audience: visits from Saint Nick, musicals of their favorite stories and Santa’s Shop; a group of creative workshops for children where they can participate to music workshops, watch puppet shows and listen to stories, but also use their creative side by painting, modeling, doing manual work and origami.
And this year will be no different, for even if the activities change, the feeling of warmth and happiness will remain, and you can hopefully carry it with you even after the Christmas Fair is over.
