Covid-19 Vaccine Passport to travel in Europe

The Covid-19 Vaccine Passport for travelling in Europe is becoming a reality. If no global decision has been taken by the European Union, the President of the European Union Commission, Ms Ursula von der Leyen supports the project of a common vaccination certificate and the World Health Organization is working on an international certificate.

Some European countries such as Iceland, Sweden, Denmark but also Greece, Portugal, Spain, are implementing lightened health measures for vaccinated travellers by issuing vaccine passports for their vaccinated citizens and by recognizing vaccine passports / vaccination certificates issued by other EU and non-EU countries.

How to get this Covid-19 Vaccine Passport to travel in Europe?

Whether in digital or paper form, this vaccine passport or proof of vaccination will be issued to you by your country of origin once your vaccine has been made. Its advantage? Allow you to travel without having to do additional Covid-19 tests and without risking being in quarantine.

The Vaccine Passport or vaccination certificate must be validated by the respective country of origin and state the name, date of birth, health number, type and date of the test and vaccines (date of the two doses taken) and respect for the immunization period according to the instructions for each vaccine.

You do not need to be European to travel to Europe thanks to your vaccine passport since many European countries are already committed to recognizing passports issued by other countries at international level.

You are not a priority in your country and have not got  vaccinated yet? Simulate the date of your vaccination and plan to be present on these dates to get vaccinated as a priority.

How to travel in Europe without the Vaccine Passport?

The Covid-19 vaccine passport should allow you to avoid other formalities and to travel more easily and freely. If you do not have the chance to get vaccinated before you go on holiday, you are allowed to travel with a negative covid 19 test (carried out max 72 hours before your departure).

Do you want to avoid the destinations most affected by Covid-19 for fear of getting stuck on the spot if your test is positive? Prefer safest destinations in Europe like Madeira, the Azores,… if you are travelling by car, destinations like the Algarve (Portugal), Preveza (Greece) are good choices.

Please note that travelling by car does not exempt you from providing a negative covid-19 test. If the borders are still closed but you absolutely have to go to a European country for your work, countries like Italy, Portugal or Croatia are setting up residence permits for digital nomads. These professional visas will allow you to stay and work in the selected country.

I have already been tested positive and have recovered. Can I travel?

Some destinations like Madeira, Batumi, offer travel facilities for travellers who have already been tested positive and have recovered. You must have tested positive and have recovered max 90 days prior to your departure.

Having caught Covid-19 does not mean you are immune. Having already been tested positive for Covid-19 will probably not be sufficient proof to do without a test or a vaccination certificate to travel to many European countries. Proof of a test showing your past positivity to Covid-19 or showing that you have developed immunity to Covid-19 will be less convincing than a vaccination certificate.

Which countries will issue and recognize this Vaccine Passport and which destinations to favour for your holidays in Europe?

Greece, Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, Israel, Spain, Iceland, Georgia,... are making a positive commitment by setting up Covid-19 Vaccine Passports for their citizens. These countries also undertake to recognize Vaccine passports issued by other countries. These pioneer countries on this subject are therefore to be favoured if you have planned to be vaccinated in the coming weeks.

Their recognition of the vaccination certificate will allow you to avoid additional covid-19 tests and avoid quarantines. If your vaccination is scheduled for the spring, you can already plan your holiday in destinations that are committed to the recognition of the vaccine passport.

Please, note that some vaccines are only effective after 2 doses have been injected. Find below some destinations that have already committed to the recognition of the vaccination certificate or vaccine passport and are ready  to welcome travellers with a vaccination certificate.
