The rumour goes that Santa actually comes from Valkenburg aan de Geul…You see, as days get shorter, Valkenburg – in the ever so enchanting Heuvelland region in de Southern part of the Netherlands – transforms into a cosy and delightful Christmas town. From 18 November 2022 until 8th January 2023 the small town of Valkenburg, situated on the river Geul in Zuid-Limburg, turns into ‘Kerststad Valkenburg’. In 2022 Valkenburg can call itself European City of Christmas. In Valkenburg – immersed in a magical atmosphere, with a paradise of twinkling lights and beautifully decorated Christmas trees – you see, smell, hear and taste Christmas in everything and there are numerous things to do!

2. The Hague
From 8th December to 24th December 2022
Royal Christmas Fair in The Hague is one of the biggest Christmas markets in the Netherlands. Twinkling lights and familiar Christmas carols at the romantic Lange Voorhout are bound to get you in the ultimate Christmas mood. Among this year's 100 stalls you'll be able to find gift ideas, wintery fashion and design decorations.
Royal Christmas Fair The Hague is a unique Christmas market where you can do extensive Christmas shopping in an atmosphere of good cheer. This is the number one spot for finding lovely, original Christmas gifts. A thick layer of snow completes the fairytale decorations. And a mug of hot chocolate or Glühwein is the perfect accompaniment.

There’ll be plenty of magic at the Vrijthof this year too. Alongside the familiar Ferris wheel, the idyllic Alpine-inspired chalet or ‘Almhütte’, the 900 m2 covered ice rink, and the Christmas market, the Saint Servatius Basilica will be opening its doors for the first time this year during the winter event. In line with a fine local custom, visitors can light a candle and enjoy a moment of peace and tranquillity. Whispering tours for children (a Christmassy exploration of the basilica's many treasures), music, and Christmas stories are brought together magically in the fun at the Vrijthof and the time for reflection in the basilica.
The enchanting light trail of the Magical Light Route takes you through various parts of the city centre: from the vibrant and trendy Wyck and modern Céramique to the industrial Sphinx Quarter and romantic Jeker Quarter. Planning to walk the entire route from start to finish? Then be prepared to be amazed by the many historical, cultural, and culinary treasures that Maastricht has to offer. This year's route has been expanded considerably. Several large stars are being added and the Sphinx Quarter is going all out with a truly impressive light art display in and around the Bassin harbour.
In the first weekend of The Royal Christmas Fair there will be a Royal Kids Market. Near museum Escher in het Paleis rises a winterwonderland with attractions, activities ans Christmas producs for kids.
