From 12th November to 23rd December 2022
When fragrant mulled wine warms your hands, the smell of freshly roasted almonds fills the air and a festive glow hangs over the entire Essen city center, it can only mean one thing: The Essen International Christmas Market has started again. From November 12 to December 23, look forward to one of the largest and most beautiful markets in the country, which will make your pre-Christmas season that much more beautiful and magical.
The Christmas market stretches all over the city center, and you only have to walk a few steps to get from square to square. The centerpiece is Kennedyplatz. Here you can stroll relaxed along the stalls under a twinkling net of lights and be inspired by the variety of goods. As the name promises, the traders come from around 190 countries all over the world. There are handicrafts from Africa, Christmas decorations from Israel and jewelry from the Baltic States.
Unlike many other Christmas markets in Germany, the organizers in Essen still attach great importance to the fact that you will receive gifts and beautiful things and not just consumables at the majority of the festively decorated stands. Spicy mulled wine and steaming churros are a must when visiting the Christmas market. But it is the mixture that makes the difference. So you can also take a trip back in time at the medieval market. Here, merchants dressed in medieval costumes sell their leather goods, jewelry or honey wines by torchlight and juggler music.
The uniqueness of the International Christmas Market Essen is not only due to its variety of goods from all over the world, but also to its very special glow of lights. Since the 1920s, the Essen Light Weeks have been providing a very special Christmas stroll at Advent time with changing light motifs. A highlight - especially for young visitors - since last year have been the illuminated animals from all the continents of the world, which are distributed throughout the city center. Orca, giraffe, elk and Co. are the ideal motifs for a family souvenir photo of a very special day at the Essen Christmas Market.
For years, the organizers have been paying attention to sustainability, among other things by exclusively using green electricity. In addition, to respond to the energy crisis, this year they are saving 20 percent of the electricity compared to last year by shortening the lighting times and refraining from using energy-intensive light modules. However, this does not diminish your Christmas market visit. An ideal way to see all the beauty of the market for yourself is to take a ride on the light wheel. This takes you 45 meters high above Essen's city center. It's best to make the ride when it's dark, then the magic of light from the Essen International Christmas Market will be even more impressive.
