Best Sport Destinations in Europe

Every year, Europe hosts more than 30,000 international sporting events while investing billions in next-generation sport infrastructure — from Olympic aquatic centres to panoramic cycling highways and waterfront swim zones.

But in 2026, something has changed.

Sport is no longer confined to stadiums. It has become a lifestyle choice — a reason to travel, to relocate, to invest, to raise active families.

At the forefront of this movement stands Marbella, crowned European Best Sport Destination 2026.

More than a host of Ironman 70.3, championship golf, regattas and elite tennis academies, Marbella represents a rare balance: high-performance infrastructure, year-round Mediterranean training conditions and growing leadership in women’s and youth sport. It is a city where you can train in Olympic disciplines during your holidays — or choose to build your life around them.

But Marbella is not alone. In 2026, Monaco reinforces its global prestige with the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. Oslo hosts the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, leading Europe’s inclusive sport model. Paris consolidates its Olympic aquatic legacy. Nice shines as the final stage of the Tour de France. Budapest stages the UEFA Champions League Final. Lisbon surges as Europe’s Atlantic surf capital. Geneva maintains its elegant sailing heritage, while Reykjavik and Hvar redefine outdoor endurance and adventure.

To identify Europe’s leading sport destinations, we worked with sports journalists and international correspondents to shortlist 39 cities distinguished by:

  • Infrastructure quality and accessibility

  • International event impact

  • Year-round active lifestyle potential

  • Commitment to inclusivity, women’s sport and youth development

These destinations were submitted to public vote.
A total of 17,823 sport-oriented travellers — competitors, cyclists, marathoners, golf travellers and active families — selected the 10 Best Sport Destinations in Europe 2026.

This ranking goes beyond trophies. It highlights the cities where you can watch sport, practice sport and live sport — 365 days a year.

In 2026, these are Europe’s sport capitals where ambition meets wellbeing — and where sport becomes lifestyle.

1. Marbella

Spain

Recognised in Monaco and driven by long-term investment, Marbella illustrates how sport is becoming a strategic lever for Europe’s most ambitious destinations.

Marbella is entering a new phase of its international positioning. Recently recognised in the Principality of Monaco — in the presence of H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie of Monaco and the Mayor of Monaco — the destination is progressively establishing itself among Europe’s leading sports destinations.

This recognition is not the result of a single event, but of a coherent long-term strategy combining infrastructure, international partnerships and talent development.

Long known as one of Europe’s most iconic leisure destinations, Marbella is now reshaping its identity through sport, positioning itself at the intersection of tourism, lifestyle and global visibility. This evolution reflects a broader shift across Europe, where cities increasingly use sport not only as entertainment, but as a strategic tool for international positioning.

Marbella’s connection with high-end travel is not new. Since the 1950s, the city has cultivated an aura of Mediterranean glamour, attracting royalty, aristocracy and international figures. In that sense, today’s ambitions are rooted in a longer legacy — one that naturally resonates with Monaco. Figures such as Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III were among those associated with this golden era of refined travel and social prestige, helping to shape Marbella’s image as a destination of elegance and lifestyle.

At the core of Marbella’s current transformation lies a strong political vision.
As Mayor Ángeles Muñoz explains:

“In Marbella, sport is not merely an activity, but an element of identity and international projection, closely linked to tourism and the destination’s culture of excellence.”

This vision is already being translated into tangible projects. One of the most ambitious is the construction of a next-generation stadium, backed by an investment of over €114 million. Designed as a multi-functional complex, the venue will go far beyond football, integrating hospitality, wellness, retail and leisure spaces. With a capacity of 10,000 spectators, it is intended to operate year-round as a true hub of activity, attracting both international events and professional teams.

Beyond infrastructure, Marbella is also investing in people and knowledge. Its long-term partnership with the Fundación Cesare Scariolo, renewed until 2027, reflects a commitment to education, talent development and social responsibility. Through initiatives such as the International Basketball Clinic, the city combines high-level training with philanthropic impact, particularly in support of children undergoing cancer treatment.

This dual approach — combining infrastructure and human capital — is central to Marbella’s strategy.

As Lisandro Vieytes, Deputy Mayor for Sports, notes:

“Marbella’s commitment to sport is part of a strategic vision: attracting major events, strengthening the city’s brand and establishing Marbella as a reference destination for sport and tourism.”

Together, these initiatives form a coherent ecosystem. Marbella is not only hosting events; it is building the conditions to attract international teams, investors and visitors throughout the year.

Marbella’s transformation is still unfolding, but its direction is already clear. By combining long-term investment, international recognition and a strong political vision, the city is not simply following a trend — it is actively redefining its place among Europe’s leading destinations.

Nice — The Riviera’s Endurance and Cycling Capital

Nice confirms its position as one of Europe’s most visually compelling endurance destinations. Hosting the Final Stage of the Tour de France places the city under global spotlight, reinforcing its identity as a cycling and performance hub.

But Nice is not defined by a single event. The Promenade des Anglais remains one of Europe’s most iconic running routes, stretching along the Mediterranean and attracting marathoners, triathletes and amateur runners year-round.

The nearby Alpine climbs — Col d’Èze, Col de la Madone — are legendary among professional cyclists and training camps.

The city also benefits from its triathlon heritage, with long-standing Ironman history and open-water swimming culture embedded in local life.
