Coronavirus: Safest Destinations to visit in 2021

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have been giving you regular information about the situation with the publication of updated maps in real time on the coronavirus situation "Covid-19" in the world (WHO).

The situation has been evolving constantly: first we communicated with you about the destinations to avoid, then, at the peak of the crisis and following the WHO recommendations, we advised you to stay at home.

As soon as it became possible to travel, we informed about the safest destinations based on criteria such as the number of active cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants, the number of deaths, health measures, recommendations put in place by the authorities to welcome you in hotels, tourist accommodations, shops and restaurants in compliance with health standards.

If a vaccine against covid-19 may allow us to travel more safely, many of you want to travel to destinations that have remained safe throughout this pandemic. We have selected destinations in which hospitals have never been overcrowded, destinations that have experienced fewer cases of covid-19 and are also less likely to impose a curfew or restrictions during your stay. For practical reasons we have selected destinations that have not imposed a quarantine: some safe destinations such as the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway or Finland do not appear in this ranking for this very reason despite experiencing low cases of covid-19. Here is a list of destinations that have remained safer during these last months, in comparison to others and which are open to travellers. You will find all travel restrictions (covid-19 test or not and forms to be filled out for each destination listed).

Please note that travel conditions, health measures of the various destinations as well as the number of cases of Covid-19 are listed and updated regularly.

Remain vigilant and do not forget the barrier gestures, social distancing, wearing a mask when possible or required. Avoid travelling if you are in poor health. People over 70, or overweight or with respiratory problems, should be particularly vigilant. It is also our responsibility to protect our most fragile loved ones and the people from our host countries.

We recommend you book your accommodation and check the option “100% refund without cancellation fees” as well as your flights and your tours and activities (cancellable up to 24 hours before ).

Disclaimer of liability: Every effort is made to provide up to date, accurate and complete information. However, the pandemic evolves daily and we strongly recommend that you check the rules governing the country of departure and the destination country.

Georgia

Throughout this health crisis, Georgia has been viewed as a safe destination. As soon as cases arose, the Georgian government decided to close its borders to protect its population and travellers. Lagoa - Algarve

Portugal

Almost untouched by covid-19, Lagoa is one of the safest destinations in Europe with 8 times fewer severe cases per million inhabitants than hard-hit destinations. If we take the population of the Algarve and the number of serious cases (deaths), the region is even half as affected by Covid-19 than certain regions of Greece, which are already seen as a safe destination.

With one of the lowest population densities per km2 in Europe, the Algarve, like neighbouring Alentejo, has been less affected by Covid-19 than major European destinations. Fewer people per km2, clean air, beautiful walks along the Coast, unspoilt nature, this is what you will enjoy in this less touristic part of the Algarve.

Lagoa put measures in place very early to protect the local population and reduce the spread of Covid-19.  Bringing together some of the most beautiful jewels of the Algarve such as the beaches of Cova Redonda or the beach of Praia Nova and its famous chapel, the beach of Marinha, the villages of Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Porches,... Lagoa is probably one of the most beautiful Algarve destinations and one of the safest.

Cluj-Napoca is one of the most beautiful destinations in Europe and one of the most attractive cities in Romania; it is also one of the safest destinations to visit in Europe thanks to measures taken to reduce the impact of COVID-19.

Romania reacted very quickly (purchase of medical equipment) and recorded fewer cases of Coronavirus than the most affected countries. In addition to national measures, Cluj-Napoca has implemented very specific measures: disinfection of public transport every 4 hours (we have not seen better in Europe), protection of elderly people, specific opening hours (from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.) in shops and markets and specific reception centres for patients with Covid-19.

In the historical region of Transylvania, in a picturesque area, the City of Cluj-Napoca quietly awaits to be discovered. Once you descend into the city and feel its vibe, you’ll be forever charmed. The essence of Cluj lies in the responsible people who created a dynamic and multicultural society where you’ll easily blend once you get to feel the city. If you take a moment to connect with Cluj-Napoca, you’ll see for yourself why it can be deemed one of the safest destinations in Europe.

Terraces in Cluj-Napoca are ready to welcome you with social distancing measures, staff trained in necessary hygiene rules and the use of digital menus, for example.

The Portuguese authorities very quickly supported the idea of a vaccination certificate. Portugal's Minister of the Interior said that vaccination is safe enough to allow abolishing several measures. Your proof of vaccination, on which your name appears, will allow you to enjoy a relaxing holiday, without fear of additional Covid-19 testing or quarantine.

Portugal, while it has experienced a more difficult autumn and winter, was relatively spared by the first wave of Covid-19 and had a good 2020 tourist season in regions like the Algarve known for its magnificent beaches, among the best beaches in Portugal.

This region is also one of the least affected in Europe with one of the lowest number of deaths linked to Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants.

With a large offer of accommodation on a human scale, the Algarve is a destination of choice for those who want a private villa with swimming pool or a tourist apartment with fully equiped kitchen. If you don't feel like swimming in a shared swimming pool, there are many beaches around. You will feel safe on Nova Praia beach in Porches or "Meia Praia" in Lagos. Rarely crowded, Algarve beaches are an ideal choice for a safe family holiday this summer.

Of course travelling to the Algarve without a vaccine passport is possible with a recent negative covid-19 test carried out in your country (max 72 hours before your departure). The hotels, restaurants, cafes and beaches remained open  last summer and it should be the case this summer too.
