Best places to travel in Europe 2026

Every year, millions of travellers from around the globe help shape the ultimate list of the Best Destinations in Europe, and 2026 is no exception. This prestigious ranking reflects the votes of travellers from 154 countries, highlighting the most captivating places for unforgettable European travel experiences.

Before the public vote begins, our team of travel specialists reviews more than 500 destinations across Europe. This first stage combines key performance indicators such as tourism growth (Eurostat), increases in online searches, rising popularity on social media, and each destination’s commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and local development (including EDEN destinations, European Capitals of Culture, Green Capitals, UNESCO sites, and other EU-recognised initiatives).

From this extensive analysis, 20 outstanding destinations are shortlisted in collaboration with our network of professional travel media. These destinations are then submitted to voters worldwide, who determine the final ranking.

This combination of expert evaluation and traveller voting makes the European Best Destinations award the only distinction in Europe that blends professional insight, media relevance, and the voice of millions of travellers. The final ranking is based on votes cast by registered European Best Destinations travellers (1,330,682 votes), with each participant able to vote for up to three destinations, resulting in over one million votes from a global panel built continuously since 2009.

From iconic cultural hubs to hidden gems, these destinations offer the perfect mix of history, culture, gastronomy, and natural beauty. Planning a romantic escape? Traveling with family? Or exploring Europe solo? These award-winning destinations cater to every style of travel, offering unforgettable cultural adventures, culinary experiences, and scenic wonders.

1. Madrid, Spain

Madrid Leads Europe - Spain Confirms Its Golden Momentum

Voted European Best Destination 2026, Madrid confirms its transformation into one of Europe’s most compelling capitals — where culture, lifestyle, gastronomy and quality of life converge with rare intensity.

But Madrid’s recognition is not an isolated success. It reflects a broader Spanish momentum shaping Europe’s travel landscape. In 2024, Marbella became the first Spanish destination ever crowned European Best Destination, setting a historic record of votes and establishing a new benchmark for Spain’s international positioning. In 2025, Monaco followed, reinforcing the rise of refined, experience-driven destinations across Europe. In 2026, Madrid takes the lead.

Together, these distinctions reveal a clear evolution in European travel: destinations defined by identity, excellence and emotional impact are shaping the future of tourism.

Madrid embodies this new vision of European travel — where heritage, creativity and lifestyle form a seamless experience.

At its cultural core lies the UNESCO-listed Landscape of Light, bringing together the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums in a unique urban corridor where art, architecture and nature coexist. Yet Madrid’s cultural energy extends far beyond its institutions. Neighbourhoods such as Carabanchel, once industrial, have been reimagined by artists and designers, emerging as vibrant hubs of experimental galleries, studios and contemporary expression that reflect the city’s constant reinvention.

Madrid is also the birthplace of the tablao flamenco, where this powerful and intimate art form is experienced up close — a living expression of Spain’s cultural identity that continues to shape the city’s emotional landscape.

With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, Madrid unfolds outdoors. Elegant boulevards, lively plazas and the vast Retiro Park define a lifestyle centred on openness and connection. Days extend naturally into long evenings of terrace culture, rooftop gatherings and one of Europe’s most dynamic gastronomic scenes, where avant-garde cuisine coexists with historic taverns preserving generations of tradition.

What distinguishes Madrid further is its remarkable balance — sophisticated yet accessible, vibrant yet liveable. The city has expanded green spaces, prioritised pedestrian areas and developed one of Europe’s most efficient public transport systems, reinforcing a long-term commitment to sustainability and urban quality. Visitors experience a capital that pulses with energy while preserving its human scale and authenticity.

As Almudena Maíllo, Councillor for Tourism of the Madrid City Council, explains:

It is an enormous pride for Madrid to receive this recognition as European Best Destination 2026. This distinction places our city at the heart of Europe’s travel conversation and confirms the strength of a project built on culture, openness and quality of life. For Madrid, it is an opportunity to continue welcoming the world while ensuring tourism contributes positively to the energy, prosperity and identity of the city.”

More than a destination, Madrid reflects how Europe travels today — immersive, experiential and deeply connected to place.

2. Nicosia, Cyprus

Nicosia 2026: Europe’s Most Surprising Cultural Destination — Where History Meets a New Mediterranean Energy

Nicosia is having a defining moment. Crowned Best Cultural Destinations in Europe 2026, the Cypriot capital feels like the Mediterranean’s most intriguing blend of past and future — a place where Venetian walls, art labs, concept cafés and contemporary museums sit side by side in a city that never stops reinventing itself.

This isn’t the Mediterranean of postcards.

This is the Mediterranean that thinks, creates and evolves.

Walk through the Walled City and you move through centuries — Gothic arches, Venetian fortifications, Ottoman houses, courtyards perfumed with citrus. Step outside the walls, and you enter a vibrant, modern capital shaped by universities, research hubs, design studios and a new creative generation that gives the city its pulse. Nicosia’s charm lies in this contrast: history that feels alive, and modern life that feels grounded.

Food is central to the city’s identity. Under Taste Nicosia, gastronomy becomes a cultural language — shared meze in shaded courtyards, new-wave chefs revisiting Cypriot flavors, pastries made with orange blossom and rosewater, wine bars filled with local bottles. Every meal carries a sense of place and a sense of story.

Culture, too, is everywhere. Museums and contemporary art spaces trace the island’s artistic DNA from antiquity to experimental works, while seasonal events — from festive villages to open-air performances — give the city a rhythm that lasts all year.

Nicosia is the kind of destination that stays with you: warm, thoughtful, creative, quietly sophisticated.
A city break with depth, character and a very modern Mediterranean soul.

Best for:  Culture seekers, design lovers, food enthusiasts, couples, urban explorers and anyone drawn to thoughtful, creative and quietly sophisticated Mediterranean cities

Nearest airports: Book your flights to Larnaca or Paphos — both about one hour from Nicosia, with frequent international connections.

3. Stajerska Region, Slovenia

Slovenia's Most Remarkable Wine Region

The Štajerska Region, in Northeastern Slovenia, has been awarded a place among the Top 3 Best Destinations in Europe 2026, a distinction that confirms its rise as one of the continent’s most inspiring places to explore. This is a region where landscapes, culture, gastronomy and wine blend into an experience that feels both refined and deeply authentic.

Štajerska is first and foremost an exceptional wine region. Its rolling vineyards and unique micro-climates produce some of Europe’s most expressive whites — from elegant Šipon (Furmint) to vibrant Laški Rizling and crisp Sauvignon Blanc. The area’s wine tradition runs deep, yet its approach feels fresh and contemporary, with family-run estates, boutique wineries and panoramic tasting terraces that invite slow, immersive discovery. Nearby, Maribor — awarded Best Wine Capital in Europe 2026 embodies this excellence, home to the world’s oldest vine and a proud ambassador of Slovenian viniculture.

Culture and history enrich the journey even further. Ptuj, the oldest city in Slovenia and newly crowned Best Cultural Heritage Town in Europe 2026, offers cobblestone charm, medieval rooftops and a castle overlooking the Drava River. Its compact centre feels like a living museum, yet full of warmth, festivals and local life.

Nature is ever-present in Štajerska. Vineyards melt into forested hills, while the Pohorje mountain range provides opportunities for hiking, cycling, skiing and year-round outdoor adventures. River valleys invite kayaking and gentle strolls, and the countryside is dotted with thermal spas perfect for a restorative break.

Gastronomy is another highlight. The region is known for dishes enriched with pumpkin-seed oil, locally grown produce, farm-fresh cheeses, artisanal breads, and creative menus that reinterpret traditional flavours. Meals feel both generous and thoughtful — a natural companion to the region’s wine culture.

Štajerska is a destination that invites you to taste, explore and feel. In 2026, it stands proudly among Europe’s finest places — a region where wine, heritage, nature and creativity come together in a way that stays with you long after you leave.

Best for: Wine lovers, culture seekers, food enthusiasts, wellness travelers, couples, outdoor adventurers, design-minded explorers and anyone looking for an authentic, elegant European escape

Nearest airports: Book your flights to Ljubljana Airport (LJU) — around 1 hour from Maribor and approx. 1h15 from Ptuj.

You can also fly to Graz Airport (GRZ) in Austria, just 45 minutes from Maribor and easily connected to the Štajerska wine region.

Stavanger has emerged in 2026 as one of Europe’s most refined and intelligent travel choices. Ranked among the European Best Destinations, this coastal Norwegian city offers something increasingly rare: a city break where culture, nature and quality of life exist in perfect balance.

The historic centre, with its beautifully preserved white wooden houses and calm harbour streets, feels authentic rather than curated. Contemporary architecture, thoughtful museums and a confident creative scene give it a modern edge, while its rhythm remains distinctly human.

Ravello 2026: The Amalfi Coast’s True Five-Star Haven

In 2026, the smartest travellers are skipping Amalfi and Positano and heading straight to Ravello — the hilltop village long loved by artists, writers and high-society Italians for its calm, beauty and quiet sophistication.

Ravello sits high above the coastline, offering sweeping views, peaceful gardens and elegant villas that feel far removed from the busy seaside crowds. Stone lanes, intimate piazzas and refined boutiques create an atmosphere that’s classic Italy at its best.

Dining here is exceptional: lemon pastas, seafood dishes, fresh produce from the hills and wines from Campania’s volcanic vineyards. Terraces overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea turn every meal into a memory.

Spend your days exploring Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, attending open-air concerts, walking scenic paths or relaxing in legendary hotels like the Belmond Caruso.

Ravello 2026 is where the Amalfi Coast reveals its most refined, timeless and quietly luxurious side.

Best for: Luxury travellers, culture lovers, foodies, honeymooners and anyone seeking elegance without the Amalfi crowds.

Nearest airports: Book your flights to Naples International Airport (NAP), then drive or arrange a private transfer (about 1h30).

19. Procida Island, Italy

Procida : Italy’s Most Authentic Island Getaway

In 2026, Procida rises as one of Italy’s most irresistible small islands — a place where pastel harbours, quiet beaches and a gentle Mediterranean rhythm create an escape that feels warm, local and wonderfully unpolished in the best way.

The colourful fishing port of Marina Corricella sets the tone: stacked houses in pink, yellow and peach, small boats bobbing in the water, and stairways leading to tiny trattorias serving seafood caught hours earlier. No noise, no rush — just pure Italian island life.

Procida is perfect for wandering. Narrow alleys open onto sea views, cafés spill into sunny squares, and hidden coves like Chiaia and Pozzo Vecchio offer calm water and long afternoons in the sun. The island’s scale keeps everything intimate, from boutique B&Bs to family-run restaurants and beach clubs where time slows naturally.

Food is simple and exceptional: lemon-infused dishes, fresh fish, rabbit alla Procidana, seasonal vegetables, homemade pasta and sorbets scented with island citrus. Everything tastes like tradition, sun and sea.

With its cinematic colours, soft energy and authentic charm, Procida 2026 is the Italian island for travellers who want beauty without crowds — and atmosphere without effort.

Best for: Lovers, photographers, food lovers, slow travellers, families seeking calm, and anyone dreaming of authentic Italian island life.

Nearest airport: Book your flights to Naples International Airport (NAP), then take a ferry or hydrofoil (about 40–60 minutes) to Procida.
